The Washington Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs is the leading civil rights organization in DC, and one of the firm’s strongest pro bono partners. For more than 40 years, the Committee has focused on equal employment opportunity, fair housing, public accommodations, immigrant and refugee rights, disability rights, prisoners' rights and public education through impact litigation and public policy advocacy.

Kirkland has worked with the Lawyers’ Committee in a wide variety of cases, including race discrimination, education rights, disability rights and fair housing, and Kirkland lawyers have received awards for excellence in representation of WLC clients for the last four years.

The firm is committed to supporting this preeminent organization in its efforts to secure equal justice under the law for all.

When you give to the Washington Lawyers’ Committee, you are a part of driving change and achieving justice for our community and clients. Fifty years ago the Committee was founded to address the challenges identified in the famous Kerner Report, including the overarching racism and institutions that created, maintained, and condoned the conditions that African Americans lived with daily. Since then, the Committee has played an important part in ground-breaking litigation desegregating the federal workforce, challenging race discrimination at restaurants, hotels, and sports clubs, ensuring families have access to fair housing regardless of their source of income, returning stolen wages to workers, improving access to public accommodations for individuals with disabilities, taking on systemic failures in the federal prison and parole systems, and much more.

We have come a long way since 1968, yet much remains to be done. For every dollar you donate, we generate $8 in pro bono legal services by partnering our outstanding staff with the best law firms in the DC area. That leveraged legal firepower is focused on impacting the cutting-edge civil rights issues of today: racially and economically segregated communities, unequal opportunities for work and wealth, access to public services, education equity, and an unfair and racially biased criminal legal system. You can learn more about our recent work at www.washlaw.org.

Thank you.
